<![CDATA[Inventor - CATIA V5 Import Translator for Inventor]]> http://www.cadspec.co.uk/user/user/index.php/2008/11/19/inventor-catia-v5-import-translator-for-inventor.html This technology preview gives you more flexibility when creating designs with vendor or customer data by allowing you to directly import CATIA V5 files into Autodesk Inventor. This translator reads both CATPart and CATProduct files bringing solids, surfaces, wires, and points into Autodesk Inventor to be directly utilized while modeling. Being able to import directly from CATIA V5 files eliminates the need to convert the CATIA data to make it usable in your projects.

Supported Autodesk Inventor Versions

You must have a licensed copy of Autodesk Inventor 2009 SP1 or the Autodesk Inventor LT Technology Preview 2009 SP1 to run this add-in.

<![CDATA[Mechanical Desktop - Discontinuation]]> http://www.cadspec.co.uk/user/user/index.php/2008/10/14/mechanical-desktop-discontinuation.html The decision to make Mechanical Desktop 2009 the last version of the product frees additional resources for development of the Autodesk® Inventor® and AutoCAD® Mechanical product lines.

We recognize that your company may have a large inventory of models and drawings created in Mechanical Desktop and that a large proportion of this Intellectual Property remains extremely valuable to you. To protect this data, Autodesk will continue to:

Provide product support for Subscription customers for a period of no less than three years after the removal of Mechanical Desktop from the Inventor product line.

  • Make Mechanical Desktop 2009 available for download with future releases of Inventor.
  • Support the DWG Import wizard in Inventor for Mechanical Desktop part, assembly and drawing files.

While you can continue to use Mechanical Desktop 2009 software as well as earlier versions, the best way to protect your existing data is to migrate your design operations to Autodesk Inventor. As a reminder, Mechanical Desktop has been provided "in the box" with Autodesk Inventor Suite since 2002. By using the latest version of Inventor software, your company will benefit from an industry leading 3D design tool for Digital Prototyping with the ease of use characteristics pioneered by Mechanical Desktop.

<![CDATA[Inventor - New Options for Importing From Excel into a Sketch]]> http://www.cadspec.co.uk/user/user/index.php/2008/09/19/inventor-new-options-for-importing-from-excel-into-a-sketch.html Back in release 2008 of Inventor the ability to import from an excel spreadsheet was added but at that time it was only point data.

Now with 2009 you have the ability to import that point data with two new options. You can have Inventor create line geometry between those points or spline geometry.

This will work for x,y coordinates from a 2d import or x,y,z coordinates from a 3d import.

<![CDATA[Revit - View Range Explained]]> http://www.cadspec.co.uk/user/user/index.php/2008/09/05/revit-view-range-explained.html View Range ThumnailEvery plan and RCP view has a view property called View Range, also known as a visible range. The view range is a set of horizontal planes that control object visibility and display in the view. The horizontal planes are Top Clip Plane, Cut Plane, Bottom Clip Plane, and View Depth.

As their names imply, the top and bottom clip plane represent the topmost and bottommost portion of the view range. The cut plane is a plane that determines at what height certain elements in the view are shown cut. These 3 planes define the primary range of the view range.

<![CDATA[Revit - Adding a background image to your render]]> http://www.cadspec.co.uk/user/user/index.php/2008/09/05/revit-adding-a-background-image-to-your-render.html The functionality to use a background image while rending used to be available in earlier versions of Revit. The new Mental Ray rendering engine includes the ability to create a generated sky and sun but if you need to show a specific background or site the ability to add an image is no longer available.

There is an alternative that you can use to get a background image in your rendering.

You can export the Rendering to a TIFF format which exports the sky as a separate alpha channel. This makes replacing the sky in an image editor much easier. You can use Photoshop or any other image editors that read and write the TIFF file format. However, this can be a little bit extra work and requires another program.

There is a way to get around this problem and do this all inside of Revit.
