What is a CAM post processor?
A post processor acts as the link between your CAM software and CNC machine. It takes the toolpath you’ve created and converts it into the NC code format required by your particular machine and controller.
Because CNC machines and controls can differ considerably, using the right post processor is important. The wrong one can lead to errors, unexpected machine behaviour or a program that simply won’t run.
Getting this right helps your team spend less time troubleshooting and more time producing parts.
Do I need a custom post processor?
Not necessarily. Autodesk CAM products, including Autodesk Fusion, Inventor CAM, PowerMill and FeatureCAM, provide extensive post processor libraries covering a wide range of machines and controllers.
However, every manufacturing environment is different. A standard post processor may need to be configured or fine-tuned to suit your particular machine, controller or manufacturing process.
